Einstein’s timeless equation, E = mc², is usually seen as the crown jewel of modern physics, yet when reflected upon deeply, it carries echoes of ancient spiritual wisdom. The equation tells us that matter and energy are not two different realities but two forms of the same essence. What appears solid and material is in truth nothing but energy, compact and hidden from the eye. The universe of countless forms is bound together by an invisible unity.
This vision resonates with the Upanishads, which proclaim: “Sarvam khalvidam Brahma” — all this is indeed Brahman. Just as physics reveals that matter can dissolve into pure energy, Vedanta reminds us that the visible world is but a fleeting expression of the eternal spirit. The essence of all things, whether stone or star, body or breath, is one and the same.
It is also significant that light stands at the center of Einstein’s discovery. In science, light is the cosmic constant, the measure by which the universe reveals its truths. In spirituality, light has always been the symbol of awareness, knowledge, and liberation. The Gayatri mantra invokes the divine radiance to illumine our minds, and the Upanishads pray, “Tamaso mā jyotir gamaya” — lead me from darkness to light. In both science and spirituality, light becomes the bridge between the seen and the unseen, the known and the infinite.
When viewed through the lens of Hindu philosophy, the formula also reflects the very structure of human existence. Our physical body is mass, solid and finite; our subtle body (sūkṣma śarīra), made of mind, intellect, and vital force, is energy, dynamic and flowing; and at the deepest core lies the soul, the Ātman, the eternal light of consciousness. Body, energy, and soul thus mirror the equation’s interplay of mass, energy, and light.
In this way, Einstein’s equation becomes more than a scientific law; it becomes a meditation on life itself. Mass is the form, energy is the essence, and light is the constant presence that unites the two. Science and spirituality together whisper the same truth: the universe is not a collection of separate fragments but a seamless whole.
And in this realization lies the message for us. Just as every atom holds immeasurable energy, every human being carries an inner radiance beyond imagination. To awaken to that radiance is to know the deepest truth of existence. We are not separate from the light, we are the light, thus reminding us of the mahāvākya Tat tvam asi.
