The question of whether we can fully understand consciousness—and even replicate it through artificial intelligence (AI)—invites us into one of existence's most profound mysteries. Neuroscience has made impressive strides in mapping brain functionality and understanding its intricate workings. Yet, the complexity of our brain raises countless questions. While we may eventually unlock the full mechanics of brain activity, the origin of consciousness—the subjective force that seems to arise from this activity—remains an enigma.
What creates our conscious experience, that intimate “first-person” perspective only we, as individuals, can feel? Even with technology that scans brain waves, we see only patterns; we cannot measure the inner experiences occurring within someone’s mind. Neuroscientists have mapped vast networks of neurons, illuminating how these pathways process information, yet the possibility of recreating consciousness remains uncertain. Consciousness is more than the mechanical processing of thoughts; it encompasses the richness of subjective experience: how we interpret the world, respond to stimuli, and cultivate emotions.
Ancient Indian philosophy, especially Vedanta, offers intriguing insights, viewing human beings as “microcosms of the macrocosm,” reflections of the universe itself. Vedanta teaches that the world is mithya (illusory), shaped by subjective experiences unique to each individual. The well-known Vedantic phrase “Brahma Satyam, Jagat Mithya”—Brahman is real, the world is an illusion—echoes the principles of quantum physics, which observes phenomena like particle-wave duality and nonlocality. In quantum mechanics, reality at the smallest scales is a field of probabilities, with particles in superposition, only manifesting into reality when observed—a concept demonstrated in the double-slit experiment.
Physicist Sir Roger Penrose has proposed that consciousness may be linked to the microtubules within neurons, suggesting that our perception of reality arises from quantum collapses within these structures. The Chandogya Upanishad resonates with this idea, asserting that ultimate reality is unified and cannot be fully perceived through the senses. Instead, reality is filtered through naam (name), rupa (form), and vyavahar (worldly interaction)—constructs that add layers to our experience, often obscuring deeper truths.
Vedanta describes consciousness as self-knowing and eternal. Biologically, consciousness evolved from matter, emerging and evolving within our brains over millions of years, yet its true nature can only be understood by consciousness itself. Vedanta suggests that only the subject (consciousness) can know the subject, raising a question: Can objective analysis truly comprehend consciousness, or replicate it? This line of thought highlights the profound complexity of consciousness—a riddle as vast and enigmatic as it is captivating.
Human beings are unique in consciousness and in their individual responses to similar stimuli. Fingerprints, for instance, have no duplicates, even among billions of people. This individuality, shaped by our ahankara (ego) or sense of self, manifests as a diversity of thought, response, and emotional depth. Can mathematical computation replicate this inherent uniqueness? Consciousness is more than a processor of information; it carries an “I” that is aware of itself. While AI might simulate certain aspects of human cognition, can it ever possess this independent sense of self?
Replicating consciousness in AI remains uncertain, yet humanity’s quest to understand this mystery endures. Scientific exploration and philosophical insight continue to illuminate pieces of the puzzle. Could AI ever tap into the vital energy within, connecting to the subtle body’s energy centers to awaken self-awareness? Every element within the body is intricately connected to create stimuli or awareness—can AI replicate such complexity? Scientists continue to debate this question. Even if AI cannot capture consciousness in its fullness, each discovery brings us closer to understanding the nature of awareness, a quality that may remain uniquely human.
As science, philosophy, and technology converge, we may someday draw nearer to understanding this elusive phenomenon. Until then, the journey itself holds immense value, echoing our age-old drive to comprehend the essence of our existence—and perhaps, in some distant future, to realize consciousness in its fullest sense.
